Organizing homes in Hastings-on-Hudson
Hastings is a former factory village of Victorians and craftsman houses stacked up a steep slope above the Hudson, which means half-levels, short runs of stairs and rooms that meet at odd heights.
A hillside house has no single floor to keep things on. Rooms sit four steps above or below each other, so nothing has an obvious home and everything stops at the nearest landing. The attic would have absorbed it, but in this village the attic is usually the studio or the office — which is exactly why the rest of the house has nowhere to put anything.
